Cafe Graciosa

June 3, 2010

"Cafe Graciosa" 36 x 36 inches, oil on canvas, 2006

While in Portugal, I read the country’s famous sons José Saramago and Fernando Pessoa.  In a Saramago novel the main character is one of the “heteronyms” Pessoa wrote under, no doubt a tribute to the poet.   Ricardo Reis can be found seated alone in a Bairro Alto café at a table curiously set for two with a glass of wine poured for a missing guest.  (p. 230, The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis)
